“I look better than I did before”
A patient on immediate DIEP flap reconstruction, the decisions a diagnosis forces, and where she ended up.
She had immediate DIEP flap reconstruction at the time of bilateral skin-sparing mastectomies, followed by one revision with nipple and umbilical reconstruction, and finally tattooing.
In her testimonial she talks less about the operations than about the decisions — how many a patient is asked to make, and how quickly, after a breast cancer diagnosis.
Once the swelling had settled and she had her final result, she said: “I look better than I did before.”
That is not always possible and it is not promised. It is the kind of outcome that makes the work worth doing.
