What “operative efficiency” actually means for a patient

Efficiency in the operating room is not about speed. It is about design — and the difference lands on the patient.

Dr. Haddock and the surgical team operating

Dr. Haddock presented on efficiency in DIEP flap surgery at the 45th Annual meeting of the Group for the Advancement of Microsurgery, held alongside the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons in Kelowna, British Columbia.

Efficiency is not the same as rushing. It means designing every step of the operation so that nothing is wasted: surgical teams working in parallel rather than in sequence, standardised steps the whole operating room knows by heart, and equipment prepared before it is needed rather than sent for once it is.

For the patient, that design shows up in three places. Less time under anaesthetic. A lower complication risk, because time under anaesthetic is itself a risk. And recovery that begins sooner, because the operation ends sooner.

It is also why the same operation can take very different amounts of time in different hands.
